U.S. Forest Service permits:
Jake’s Rio Grande Outfitters has 140 USFS service days for elk and deer hunting, and 20 service days for mountain lion hunting. What does that mean? Well, four guided hunters on a 5-day hunt would use 20 service days. You could outfit 20-25 hunters on quality elk and deer hunts a year, and four clients on mountain lion hunts. The permit allows three different camp locations in the national forest.

One of the difficulties of running an outfitting business is to keep your costs down and your profits up. If you are working in an area where real estate is terrifically expensive (such as Aspen), it’s really hard to find a place to base your horses. The Creede area has vast areas of land where you can find a place to rent pasture, or you can find 
affordable irrigated acreage in South Fork, Del Norte, or the San Luis Valley, which is not far away. This business is small enough that a good operator can run it with a couple of helpers, such as a second guide and perhaps a camp cook, without employing 8 or 10 people throughout the hunting season. Trophy hunts in Unit 76 are sought after. This business is a good one to work hard from archery season in early September through the third or fourth rifle season in early November, make a good income, and then go back to the “real world”, without incurring the expense of running a herd of 40-50 horses and 4-5 staff members for months at a time.
